It’s an alien. And you’re not allowed to ask for maths books for your
birthday. People will think you’re sad. (I find the man who had enough time
to post you a reply telling you that you had too much time quite amusing.) I
don’t believe that your photos are really from the future. Do you think _I_
have too much time? Maybe I should start a blog instead of trying to finish
this phd. Sympathy re: Tori Amos.

Easter is over… Argg, down with the negative sign

Filed under: Uncategorized — David @ 3:31 pm Comments 3

Well… Easter is over. We got to spend Easter weekend here in Edinburgh and we had two wonderful meals with our Canadian friends Melissa and Allan. We ate to much and I drank to much. It was a wonderful combination of excess.

I also managed to finish The Count of Monte Cristo. For those of you who haven’t read it I highly recommend it. It is currently in my top 5 favorite books which I have currently read. The other include (in no particular order):

Les Miserable (Hugo)
Beach Music (Conroy)
Microserfs (Coupland)
Byzantium (Lawhead)

This list may change if you were to ask me another time. But as I write this post those would be them.

I now have a whole bunch of other books to choose to read. The top four choices are:

-The curious incident of the dog in the night
-Anna karenina (?spell)
-Some Ian Rankin books
-Moby Dick

I’ll probably read some Rankin book and start the one about the dog when Neyir and I go to Geneva in a week.

Well.. I must go back to work… I have been having problems with negative signs all day!! Argg!!! The negative sign is evil!

50p beer

Filed under: Uncategorized — David @ 2:50 pm Comments 2

When my friends Darren and Paula where here a few weeks ago, Darren introduced me to the 50p bin at Sainsbury’s. It is a bin which contains cans of beer for only 50p each. Let us just say that one of the first things to do when entering Sainsbury’s is to check out what you can get for 50p. I bought 4 tall cans of Guiness for only 2pounds. It is a deal in my opinion. I have stocked up for going to Melissa and Allans tomorrow for easter.

The really cool thing about the 50p bin is that you can get a wide variety of beer for really cheap. Last time I reached into the bin I pulled out 4 different types of beer. All of which were yummy… i also got some cider for Neyir (arg.. cider… gross).

As Homer would say…. “Mmmmmmm, Beer!”

RANDOM
Neyir said: “I almost forgot I have to hang up laundry”

My Brain heard: “I almost threw up in the laundry” …. I was concerned.

Thanks to my wife for doing the laundry today!

PHOTOS
I create a new photo album becuase a number of people said my old one sucked. check it out here and let me know what you think.

Medical Trivia

can you guess what the following photo is?

Just when you thought the flat was great

Filed under: Uncategorized — David @ 10:53 am Comments 3

So… Here Neyir and I are… Living in a great new flat… Happy as anything… There are a few small things we don’t like but are quite happy to put up with them…. Then the following happens…

This morning at 5 (yes… 5am) we both get woken up to loud music being played. I sit straight up from a deep sleep and say to neyir… “What the Heck is that?”… She replies… “I think it is Tori Amos”… The loud music continues for the next 30 min (approx). Who in there right mind puts on Tori Amos really really loud at 5 am?…. Theory’s we cam up with while lying in bed were:

1- last pub closed and they came home really drunk and just didn’t care!
2- Bunch of kids having a party! (but then we would have heard them before)
3- stereo on timer and tenets weren’t home.
4- pissed at us because they don’t like Neyir singing at 3 in the afternoon

I think 1 is the most likely.

So… We hope this isn’t a recurring thing. If so, I may have to resort to drastic measures and get out bed.

Regular Problems

Filed under: Uncategorized — David @ 3:53 pm Comments 1

So I have been trying to work on this problem for the past two days. I am making the equations of motion “Regular”. This means removing the singularity as two planets get close to each other. But I can’t get the equations to work out. They should… But I can’t seem to do it.

Anyways, we had no astronomy tea yesterday so I didn’t get cornered again and have to talk. Unfortunately we were supposed to have a guest presenter and as the tea was cancelled we didn’t have the presentation. Over all I was disappointed.

So today I volunteered to cover a tutorial for someone else. I got lost finding the room. I got there 10 min late and when I did arrive the door was locked. So I found a free room and piled all the students into that. Buy that time 20 min have gone by and there are only about 30 min left for the tutorial. So I said to the class… “Why don’t you just hand in your assignment and if you want to go you can go… But if you have any questions I would be happy to answer them”. Everyone then leaves except for this one guy who hasn’t done the assignment. He then proceeds to tell me he usually works on the assignment during the tutorial and proceeded to sit down and work on the assignment. So I had to sit there for the next 30 min while this guy worked on the problems he should have already done. I wasn’t impressed.

well… i must get back to work…. have to get these equations
regularized!!!

New Shoes

Filed under: Uncategorized — David @ 12:13 pm Comments 1

Just before moving to Edinburgh I purchased a new pair of shoes. The shoes I bought were of the hiking variety which I though would provide lots of support and server me well as I figured I would be doing much walking. Well six months later….. Although the shoes did provide much support and I did walk many km on them, they only lasted me 6 months!

Anyways… The new pair I purchased are cool… They are Columbian’s and they are slip one’s which is a bonus. Now I have the trouble of breaking them in.

Went to an Applied Math seminar today. It was on seeking pulse solutions to coupled LAD equations. It was good in the sense that I was able to follow and pay attention for the first 40 min. The last 20 min was too far above my head to follow and got a little boring. Over all though I give it a 7 out of 10.

Working on a solution to a three body problem today. When I integrate the equations the stars don’t move anywhere!! Hmmm I wonder if I discovered some new stability region!!? …… Or…… I just suck and have done something wrong? I think it is the second…. Anyone disagree?

Sick today

Filed under: Uncategorized — David @ 2:57 pm Comments 0

So here i am sitting on the couch with a thermometer in my mouth wonderin how I got into the state. I feel like a bad husband because my wife has gone off to clean the old appartment while i lay here and try to get better. I do have a pretty good excuse though. I had a fever of 102F when she left. it was up 4 degrees from this morning. I am hoping that the tylenol I took a couple of hours ago helped. *sigh*

I hope I am better tomorrow as cleaning of the old flat needs to continue.

I hope Neyir brings home treats!

Being sick isn’t that bad though. I think i get alot further through The Count of Monte cristo. I has taken me awhile to get 800 pages into it.. Perhaps i can finish it today.

Ahhh my temperature has gone down to 101F. *sigh* Hope I am better tomorrow.

Moving day

Filed under: Uncategorized — David @ 10:03 am Comments 1

So today is moving day!!

Woo hoo, I am so excited (typed with no expression).

It is unfortunate that I have the excitement level that I do because this is over all a really good thing. I think the excitement isn’t there because I feel like my head is going to explode. Grrrr Arrrg…. I hate colds.

On a happier note: I had a meeting with my advisor today which went well. He lent me another book to read: “Celestial Mechanics, An introduction to Classical and Contemporary Methods”. Sounds fun eh? This is added to a growing pile of books that I need to read which include:

“Shadowing in Dynamical Systems”, “Classical Mechanics”, “The Gravitational Million Body Problem”, “Long-Time Predictions in Dynamics”

As this PHD progresses I find a increasing pile of work that I need to do and less and less time to do it. For the first 6 months I have been trying not to work at home so that Neyir and I can spend more time together. This policy may have to change if I am to get through the work that I have to do.

BTW: I Hate colds! *sniff sniff* ARRGGGGG
