So have you ever felt like you wasted two hours of your life?
Last night, Neyir and I went to see the new Tom Cruise movie “War of the Worlds”. I think the movie ranks down there with some of the worst movies that I have seen (the bottom includes movies such as “White Man’s Burden” and “The Money Train”). Through out the whole movie I was waiting for something to happen. Nothing really happens. Even the special effects weren’t all that special. Especially for a Sci-Fi movie. And Let’s just say… the ending…. blew big chunks. All of a sudden the movie was over (thank goodness for that). I can see how the movie appeals to Tom’s church of scientology views (What a freek of nature he is).
Anyways, the whole point is that after the movie was done… all that really happened was that I felt like Two hours of my life were taken from me for no good reason what so ever.
Do you think I could write to Steven Spielburg and ask him for my money back. the 3 pounds I spend to go see it could have been used for beer instead!
Which reminds me of a funny story. Yesterday was a hot day, so I put a can of Lager in the freezer to get it cold. I forgot about it. It wasn’t until 6 hours later, when i remembered that there was a beer in the freezer. Let us just say that there wasn’t a big mess in the freezer!
I guess that wasn’t a funny story.
Anyways, while I am writing this Neyir is getting ready to leave me for another week. I had better go spend some time with her.

Well today is my mothers birthday. It is a unique moment in time for her because from today until Sept 30, she will be exactly twice my age! This will only happen once in our life times and she needs to appreciate it while it lasts. I think this means by sending me and Neyir lots of things. She laughed when i informed her of this.
One thing that is great about my mother is that I am always able to make her laugh. It is a secret weapon I have to always put a smile on her face. Even if it only lasts for a second and is followed by some sort of motherly curse that I probably deserve.
My mother (and father) is one of the most generous people I know. The lengths that she went through for my brothers and I are amazing. I wish when i grow up (lets face it I’m not grown up yet) I can be generous as her. When it come down to it, when Neyir and I become parents, I have had the best role models to learn from.
A funny story about my Mother:
After finishing my undergrad i moved to vancouver to get a Masters degree. After finishing that i took a job out west and ended up living there for almost 8 years. During my first 7 years she never came to visit me. Then, in our last summer in Vancouver Neyir put on a recital. My mother decided then it was time to come to Vancouver. To put it bluntly, she came to see my wife, not me!!!! I am really glad that she likes Neyir so much. I am lucky that my wife and my mother get along so well.
anyways,
Happy Birthday Mom
I hope you have a fabulous day!

Well, my first year thingy is over.
What did the examiners say?
They recommend me to advance to a Supervised PhD student instead of just a Supervised Post Grad.
I didn’t know that I was only a Supervised Post Grad before.
Comments:
Mostly superfical, typos, expand on a few points.
Richards advisor gave me a good idea which I hope to explore
I’m glad that it is over. Now I can get back to doing my research.
Most importantly though, I would like to thank Neyir for two reasons:
1- Proof reading my Paper - an opera singer proof reading a math paper. Who would have thought! Kudos to her.
2- Putting up with my grumpiness.
and a third
3- being so good looking!
Love you babe.
Oh yeah, thanks to Heggie too (my advisor, just in case he is reading this)

I just realized that all the supposed ironic situations in Alanis Morissette’s
song are not acutally ironic.
Do you think that it is ironic that it took me until after my first year in Grad
School to figure it out?
I tell you what…. (said with a cool american accent)
If someone were to offer me a free ride when I am already there… I would take
it.
Lets face it, free is good when you are a student.
or
Beggers can’t be choosers.
whatever

The world is getting a little crazy, and by the world I specifically mean this corner of it. We are in the midst of G8 summit insanity at the moment. Today is the official start but there have been events and protests in Edinburgh since last Saturday. Mostly things have been quiet, a little police statish but quiet. I have had to change walking routes minorly and this past Monday you could not have paid me enough money to take a city bus as Princes street and its environs were totally shut down for the anarchists.
Today I was planning on heading to Stirling for my usual Wednesday lesson but alas all roads and trains into the city have been blocked. Apparently the protesters have put logs across the highway and are marching to Gleneagles. You know you are not in Vancouver when protesters are cutting down trees as part of their action.
I am in favour of expressing oneself and standing up for you beliefs etc but it has occurred to me that if all these folks who are anti-capitalism spent all this effort on fostering anti-capitalist endevours they would accomplish a heck of a lot more. But then where is the fun in creating a happy self-sustaining community complete with vegetable patch when you can be helping to destoy the lovely Princes street gardens.
Well that is my pseudo rant a bit hurried. Oh yeah and for all you anarchists out there could you try and be a little more environmentally friendly, leave the trees and flowers alone!! What about protesting with some capitalist type product, cinder-blocks make a lovely blockade and can be picked up from your neighbourhood construction site or there are always piles of scaffolding to be had…..I am sure you can come up with something!
