Pierogi’s and other things.

Another weekend in edinburgh.

This weekend wasn’t full of as much excess as last week. But it was still packed full of things.

Friday we went to Judith and Craigs for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer night. We watched a few episodes and they made a buffy quiz. I was please to see that I sucked at the quiz. They fed us pizza and we drank tonns of wine.

Saturday was spend getting some errands done and doing a little school work. We then went to a Halloween Party at Bryce and Ashley’s house. Neyir dressed up as a Bollywood dancer and I was the silent waiter from the Edinburgh Fringe Festivals “I Hate Music” extraveganza. We left at about 2:30am, but thanks to the time change we managed to get some sleep.

Sunday we managed to stumble out of bed and we made it to church. I even stayed awake for the sermon. After church we were invited to lunch at the Stubbs family house. I had a weekly dose of protein. I brough along a recipe for the “Urminsky Family Pierogies”. To my surprise, Clair wanted to make the pierogies right there and then. So we made a half batch (about 70) and they all disappeared. I was please because it has been a while since I have had pierogies. I miss them alot. If you ever get a invitation to the Stubbs house for food and good times… be sure you don’t miss it. They are the coolest family of all time.

I obtained a linux box today. It isn’t anything special except for the fact that it has a duo processor. I still need to get a monitor and keyboard for it before i can tinker with it. But I am excited.

I am looking forward to getting to bed early tonight and getting lots of work done at school this week. I have lots of coding to doo.

Note… our blog poll has concluded that more posts were need by Neyir. A close second was that this blog needs more Canadian content. See the new poll to categorise yourself!

That’s all for now. I’ll post somthing more interresting soon.

BTW: Only six weeks till I go back to Canada for christmas. I am very excited.

Unrest in Leith

Filed under: Uncategorized — David @ 6:25 pm Comments 8

So after another weekend of excesses (man I have to stop doing this to myself) I fall I’ll (probably just fatigue). But here is a recap of the weekend.

Friday night: There was a Math Pub night at the Brass Monkey. I foolishly showed up on time and had to wait 30 min for the first person to show. Slowly people trickled in and there was a good turn out. We met some Mathematicians from Iceland as well as some more people from Northern Ireland. I left to go home around 2 but I believe the evening continued into the night with the possibility of free drink. On my walk home I walked by 2 fights along Leith Walk. One was being broken up by police and the other was almost over I think.

Saturday: Slept in…. had to recover from the night… had an after noon nap…. watched a lot of furturamma. Then off to Richards house for the ceremony of the “Watching of the Television”. There was drinking of beer and lots of crisps (mmmmm crisps). I received a fix of adverts to my brain and watched Family Guy and American Dad. This was followed up with the watching of Ghostbusters (the first one). I was up until 2 and on the walk to Richards I walked by another fight along Leith Walk.

Today: Church was attended… I fall sick (fever of 102F… I think it is just because I am exhausted as a result of the drinking)… Bought new shoes. Very excited about the new shoes. They are CATERPILLAR shoes and I am very excited to be wearing them. This is the third pair of shoes that needed to purchased since moving here. These seem very durable and hopefully will last me long. That being said… I was very happy with the last shoes I had. They were columbians (slip ons) and lasted me 8 months of walking.

No fights were spotted today… maybe I should take a walk at 2am and see if I can spot any. Don’t get the wrong impression of Leith though. I really do feel quite safe walking around here. I think with the hours of sunlight decreasing people are getting more aggressive. I should write my PhD on this. All this being said. I have only seen 4 fights in Leith since we moved here.

I am looking forward to a week of school so that I can rest and recuperate. Next weekend will be busy again. I think we have the whole weekend booked. I am going to reduce the amount of alcohol intake though.

Skye was awesome

Filed under: Uncategorized — David @ 9:05 pm Comments 4

So we went to Skye this past weekend. It was awesome. It was a great time to relax and rest. We eat lots of yummy food thanks to Ashley and Neyir (and I had lots of dishes to clean!!). Most importantly, Bryce gave two great sermons (I know this because I was able to stay awake!) The Picture below says it all!

And they’re off!!!!

To the Isle of Skye that is!!!! We are off for the weekend with our friends Bryce and Ashley. We have a free place to stay courtesy of Bryce preaching on Sunday morning and we are all taking Monday off so that we can have a nice leisurely return journey. Personally I plan on spending lots of time reading, sleeping, walking, knitting and just hanging out. Should be great. I will endevour to post pictures when we get back, though I suppose that means we will have to take some ;-). Actually we have tons of pictures that we simply never get around to putting up. Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Do you want to be Canadian?

Filed under: Uncategorized — David @ 9:44 am Comments 6

I am all about splitting people into two groups.

For instance, the world can be divided into those who stack their pancakes and those who do not (Neyir stacks hers while I do not… opposites do attract people!!).

Also, the world can be divided into the people who prefer thick pancakes and those who like them thin.

Would you prefer Bacon or Sausage with those pancakes? (just so you know… the answer to this question is YES!)

See…. the divisions are endless.

But a more important division, is as follows:
Those who are Canadian and those who want to become Canadian.

Yes folks… this is viable division. You just might not realise that you fit into one of these categories.

However, if you fit into the latter category you might want to check out this webste to become an Honourary Canadian.

Fill out the form now and reap in the benefits of being an Honourary Canadian, eh.

Happy 30th to the Pancake Stacker

Filed under: Uncategorized — Neyir @ 9:17 am Comments 8

That is right folks, not only am I thirty today but I am also a Pancake stacker!!!! This morning as I ate my beautifully prepared pancakes and bacon, David (the chef), commented that the world is divided into two types of people; those who stack their pancakes and those who do not - odd.

Thus far I have had a lovely birthday even though it is still early in the day. Friday evening David threw me a glorious party which was very well attended and went until 4am. Saturday evening we had a smaller celebration with another couple which went until 3am!!! Not alot of sleep but lots of fun.

Folks have been very generous. I have received more gifts than I would have time to enumerate here though David’s fantastic teapot (yes I was excited to receive a teapot), Michelle’s very thoughtful eyeshadow and eyeliner all the way from Montreal (I jumped up and down), Judith and Craig’s carefully chosen and beautiful bracelet, and Johanne’s spectacular burgundy purse AND lavender bath milk all deserve mention. And of course both David’s parents and mine have generously provided gifts (mom patiently spent a whole day shopping for the most beautiful brown suede birthday boots) and necessities.

I am really looking forward to my thirties, I am a lot happier than I was in my twenties and a heck of a lot more confident. I am both more relaxed and more demanding of myself but I think in a good way. I have the most wonderful and supportive family and friends and feel increadibly blessed. Friday was such a watershed moment, looking around and realising that in many ways Scotland is our home now and we have a strong support system here. That is not to say we are never coming back to Canada!

My department at work threw me a little pary complete with Caterpillar birthday cake (I called him Ronnie) and my desk is currently decorated with ‘Happy 30th Birthday’ Balloons. The rest of the day (after work of course) I am going to wonder off to one of the museum’s which has an exhibit called ‘Nicholas and Alexandra - The last Tzar and Tzarina’ then David and I are going to see Verdi’s Don Carlos both events courtesy of Inie Urminsky!!!

I miss all of you that I don’t get to see this birthday and think of you often and to those I do get to see - thanks for putting up with me!:-)
