Lots of Excitement

David left this morning for Cambridge, I am sure he is going to have a great time. He was excited but tried to hide it as I am sure he did not want me to think he was just happy to be rid of me for a couple of weeks, though now I think about it…

I am sorry I have been so absent from our blog lately. I have had a tough month and have been back and forth to the hospital a few times a week for tests culminating in an abdominal surgery on Friday evening. All is well and my prognosis is excellent. All the Drs and staff were fantastic and they released me yesterday. David was really concerned about me being on my own for 2 weeks but he needn’t have worried as my lovely mom has cancelled everything in her life to fly to Scotland. She leaves today and will be arriving early tommorrow morning. I am also very lucky to have my dear friend Johanne heading over today to make sure I do not do anything too crazy during my whole 24 hours on my own :-). I have to say despite the pain I am looking forward to spending time with all these wonderful women in my life and I feel so blessed that my mom (and Dad) were in a position for my mom to come over at such short notice. I expect there will be lots of tea drinking and once I am a bit more mobile a little bit of shopping and slowish walking - though at the moment I still shuffle along, quite funny actually for those of you who have ever thought I walk too fast!

I should now have lots of time to blog, though I will attempt not to do it while taking my morphine-related painkillers, I hear they can be adictive…:-)

What a day

Today started out with me waking up at 3:45am. I had the feeling that I was destined not to fall back to sleep. I got out of bed and headed for the living room. It was the perfect time to call Vancouver as they are 8 hours behind. I managed to get a hold of our friends Jeni and Matt. When Jeni answered the phone and found out it was me, she screamed

“It’s David urminsky!!!! You’ve just made my day!”

I replied, “Man, I need to call you more often!”

I was please to make her day. I’m going to try to make an effort to call them more often if this is the response I get. This is a great response as well. When was the last time some one had a reaction like this to you faithful reader? I think I need to start appreciating my friends more. Her reaction made my sleepyness not that big of a deal.

Another thing that happened today, is that I had my very first deep fried mars bar. Yes, I finally caved in and tried one. It was pretty good. I think though, that if i was at the chippy, i would rather have chips with salt and sauce than the deep fried mars bar.

Sad news is that our friends Bryce and Ashley are headed back to LA tomorrow. Here are a few things I’ll miss about them.

1- Bryce just laughed at my crude joke. It involved some hand gestures.
2- Ashley makes the best salsa sauce.
3- Bryce has been an influence on my switch to predestination.
4- Ashley will pass it on.
5- Bryce won’t pass it on.
6- They are the coolest people to hang out with in Prague. If you need a couple to vacation with, they are it!
7- I’m Bryces Yes Man. Right Bryce?
8- Ashley wants Bryce to do things with her that Neyir and I do. Neyir wants us to do things together that bryce and ashley do.
9- Bryce and Ashley secretly want to become Canadian.
10- Neyir and Ashley talk alot about woman type things.

We will miss them much.

In a few hours I’ll will have been up for 24hs straight. *sigh*

Sweet

So, for the past, I don’t know, 15 years or so, I have been telling people I am 6ft 2in tall. However, during that whole time, I though I was really about 6ft 15/8in. Yes, 1/8th short of 6ft 2in. Well, It turns out that after measuring myself today, that I am in fact 6ft 17/8in. Yes folks, I am over 6ft 2in.
This is very very sweet. Chicks dig tall guys. I guess that doesn’t matter to me anymore, but it is still sweet none the less.

Now this measurement was taken at about 4PM, so probably if i measured my height in the morning, I may be another 1/16th or 1/8th of an inch taller.

This stature comes with price. I probably hit my head on more things than you shorter people. I usually struggle to find seats which provide me with enough leg room. Yes, the air is really a little thiner up here. I cannot stand a bed which has a foot board cause my legs usually have to hang over the edge. Hmmm, there are probably more things but it is too late in the night to be thinking of them.

I once heard a statistic that only about 1% of the world’s population is over 6ft tall. Can anyone confirm this fact?

I wonder what percentage of the world is over 6ft 2in tall?

By the way, for those of you who want the metric, 6ft 17/8in is 188.277cm.

or if you care, it’s:
18827750000  Angstroms
18.53125  Hands
9.359217171717173  Links
4.360294117647059  Cubits
1.0295138888888888  Fathoms
0.009359217171717171  Furlongs

I think i like the Fathom measurement the best. It just sounds Kewl!

I am becoming very pessimistic

Yes,

Since my arrival in Scotland, I have become increasingly pessimistic about many things. Perhaps the biggist thing I am pessimistic about is trying to get anything accomplished that involves any bureaucracy. I never really noticed it before how pessimistic i have become(yes, I did complain about customer service here, but I think that is alot different than what I am talking about); yet this week I have experience good service at the hands of bureaucrats.

It started last week when the Edinburgh Council informed me that I owed a total of £2100 of taxes for last year and the up coming year. Of course I don’t have to pay this council tax as I am a student. I called the council to inquire about all this; apparently someone at the council could not find my name on a list of full time students that the university supplies the council. They informed me that I had to go to Registry and get a form signed confirming that I am a student and until I do that, I legally owed them the £2100. I was livid; mainly because I had to take time out of my day to line up at the registry and try to get a form filled out. The last time I tried this it took them 1 week to sign a form. Well, when I went to the registry, I not only didn’t have to wait, but they looked my name up on the list they send to the council. Yes, I was on the list. Next, I had to go to the council and give them the form. This ment queueing in another line and having to deal with council people (never a good experience, or is this my pessimism coming out). Well, not only did I not have to wait in a queue, they were very nice to me and even photocopied some things for me. I even left with a smile on my face cause they were so nice.

The next bit of bureaucracy I had to deal with was getting some money out of the department to pay for my trip to Cambridge. I just had to submit a reciept and fill out a form. In my mind I had build up all the possible scenarios in my head in what could go wrong. Dealing with some people in the department can be very frustrating. It turned out to be painless again.

I need to get my optimism back. Scotland is a great place and it sucks to let a few incidences skew my views about this place.

Where are all the Baptisms

Today we celebrated a baptism in our morning service. I have decided that I am going to note in our blog every time there is a Baptism in our church. It almost seems to be a rare event in our church. There are lots of children and lots of babies kicking around yet we only have a Baptism once every 6 months or so (don’t quote me on that figure, i think i may be a little high). Our church believes in infant baptism and so do Neyir and I. There is something about watching and celebrating a baptism which I find good for my soul. It is the whole congregation getting behind the child and committing to helping the child grow in faith of Jesus Christ.

I enjoy seeing a new member of the human race join the Christian community, especially as I am surrounded by so called atheists all at school. The people I meet in the Maths department are much more atheistic than that of Physics. Maybe I should have done a PhD in Physics instead.

Oh well,

Happy Baptism Joshua Andrew Fr***y, and God Bless.
