Just to clarify

Seems I caused a little confusion with my previous post. Yes we are moving but no we are not leaving Edinburgh, at least not yet. While David plans to submit his thesis in the fall meaning we could technically move we currently have nowhere to move to. What is more there are a few other bits and pieces that David will be concentrating on in the fall such as publishing, conferences and Post-grad/job applications - you know those minor projects ;-). That and the likely hood that we will have a new-born do not make for easy moving particularly to a new city/county/continent. No we will be moving, on May 5 to be precise, to a new flat in Edinburgh which unlike our current 3 (4th floor if you are North American) floor appartment is on the ground floor which means much easier transport of such things as groceries and oh yes babies!

In other more exciting happenings we had our fantastic friends Jeni and Matt Redekopp here from Vancouver this past weekend. Jeni and Matt are currently undertaking a family trip with Jeni’s family in Wales. They arrived on Thursday afternoon having left Wales on Wednesday to break up the long drive with an overnight in the lake district of England. After a leisurely chat at our flat we walked into town to meet David for dinner and then wandered home staying up much too late chatting (we were looking at pictures of their house and they were asking decorating questions - bliss for me - patience for David!)

Friday we had a nice relaxed breakfast and then piled into their rental car and drove via Pentcaitland to Melrose in the Scottish Borders. Pentcaitland , home to an excellent Whiskey brewery was witness to our picnic necessitated by all the free Whiskey the boys consumed ;-) - a good portion of which was 25 year-old. Once in Melrose we explored the ruined Abbey, walked a good distance along the trail by the river and then had a good-old Pub meal before driving home.

Saturday was ‘Edinburgh day’ as I kept reminding everyone and to keep it brief I shall say that the following were accomplished; Edinburgh Castle visited, St Giles Cathedral explored, descent to the grassmarket accomplished along with a pint or two in the famous White Hart pub, Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament viewed, Arthur’s seat partially scaled and lounging/throwing of grass fulfilled, Mary King’s Close toured and finally a mature pub crawl where our friends were able to sample their preferred variety of Haggis.

A whirlwind few days to be sure but I wouldn’t change a thing or trade the time! It was very rewarding to realise that the 4 of us still have a great time together and that it feels as though no time has passed. Even though lots has happend in all our lives we were still able to connect, relax and have a good time. If you ever get the chance to host this spectacular couple we highly, highly recommend them - AND Matt fixed our shower - WOW.

Movement and standing still

Filed under: Uncategorized — Neyir @ 11:10 am Comments 2

Because that sort of encapsulates my life at the moment. Movement because, well we are moving which is great fun - no really I am one of those strange people who loves to move, loves change, loves new things. Unfortunately this means lots of standing around, on the phone and of course in person because heaven forbid I be able to do thinks such as change my address over the phone. Bizarre side note - I can change my address via telephone with our Canadian bank but here in Scotland I must go in person with 2 forms of ID one with my address (but strangely not a bank statement. Why could I somehow fob off a fake bank statement in front of one of the bank’s employees?) to the bank to change our address.

Bah, well at least I have a day and a half of annual leave to try and accomplish some of this before our awesome friends Matt and Jeni come to visit for the weekend!!!!!! If you have a mo go and checkout their blog Matt and Jeni. We are really looking forward to their visit and feel very lucky as they are staying in Wales and therefore have two arduous 8 hour drives to make to get here and back - Wow!

In other movement news baby Urminsky is putting in daily appearances of gentle prodding which I am assured will become less gentle as the weeks go on. Mmm I can’t really move away from that now can I? Not that I in any way want to :-).

Birthdays Past

Filed under: Uncategorized — David @ 11:06 am Comments 3

Today, Neyir and I were doing a little bit of spring cleaning when I came across a few past birthday cards send to me by my dear friends in Vancouver. One of them had two old women sitting one a bench and one of the women was screeming the following into the other’s ear:

“I said…. DID YOU SEE THE ASS ON THAT GUY”

When I saw this I cracked a smile, I knew instantly who it was from, and opened it to see what was written inside it. It had a wonderful poem about me. Now, I want to share it with all of you readers.

There once was a guy named Davd,
and ice cream cakes were his crave.
His ass was a frequent display,
even to all those in verbal dismay.
With a quick turn around, unbutton & zip,
his pants would fall below each of his hips,
the sight was enough to make each viewer wonder,
whether dave was an alien, that came from ‘a younder.
He liked to ‘pass it on’, bug, poke and annoy,
’til one’s peace and quiet was successfully destroyed.
Oh! but how he could play a mean game of disc,
Hucks, scoobers, flicks and back handed wisks.
Despite all this, and many things more,
this elusive Dave left us for the scotlandmoor.
Will he be happy or will he be sad?
Well on his birithday, we will all be glad,
that we don’t have to see that white, hairy ass.

*sigh*… thx Dr. Cooper

Now I am homesick again.
